Analysis of Core Differences Between SMARTWIN LMS & BMS Linear Motor Modules, Manufacturer of Linear Motor Modules

Linear motor modules serve as the core actuator for long-stroke precision motion in automation. SMARTWIN Intelligent Equipment has launched two product lines of semi-closed linear motor modules, LMS and BMS, simultaneously. The two series share fundamental characteristics including high speed, long travel, external centralized lubrication and low dust generation, yet feature distinct differences in base structure, rigid load capacity, maximum travel limit and applicable working conditions. Equipment manufacturers can select models precisely according to equipment load, space constraints, workshop environment and maximum travel requirements, eliminating problems of over-specification or insufficient performance caused by improper selection.

Structural design and rigid load capacity constitute the core differentiator between the two modules. The LMS series features a narrow compact layout. Its representative model LMS99 has a base width of only 115 mm, adopting a lightweight integrated aluminum extrusion base paired with a single set of linear guides. The slim overall body minimizes footprint occupation. It delivers a relatively low continuous thrust range and is suitable for high-speed reciprocating motion with light payloads. In contrast, the BMS series adopts an extended, thickened high-strength aluminum alloy base equipped with standard 15-2 linear guides, which drastically boosts structural rigidity and deformation resistance. Its continuous thrust ranges from 65 N to 3839 N, supporting long-duration high-speed operation with medium loads without resonance or deflection under high-speed reciprocation over long strokes.Clear gradient segmentation applies to stroke and dynamic parameters. The standard maximum travel of BMS modules reaches 5788 mm, tailored for ultra-long-distance cross-station conveying equipment. The LMS base offers a standard travel of 2890 mm; its narrow frame restricts base thickness, leading to remarkable rigidity degradation when travel exceeds 2 meters, making it more ideal for precision stations with medium & short strokes within 2 meters. Both series support a maximum running speed of 5 m/s with equivalent acceleration performance. Nevertheless, thanks to dual-guide support, the BMS series maintains superior stability of positioning accuracy across the full travel range at 5 m/s compared with the narrow single-rail LMS structure.

The two modules have clear segmentation in environmental adaptability and applicable scenarios. The narrow compact LMS series fits small precision equipment for 3C electronics, optical inspection and semiconductor industries, which feature high workshop cleanliness, low dust level and limited internal installation space, such as camera mounting stations, PCB dispensing equipment and micro vision inspection platforms. The BMS series adopts semi-closed sheet metal housing with higher protection grade and dual-guide heavy-load layout, suitable for mass production lines with minor dust and debris including lithium battery, photovoltaic and laser processing industries. It delivers outstanding performance in scenarios of long-stroke heavy-load handling and multi-workpiece linked conveyance. Both series are equipped with external centralized lubrication fittings, enabling guide rail lubrication without housing disassembly. The low-dust and low-noise design meets basic requirements of semi-clean workshops. In addition, they can form a closed-loop control system when matched with SMARTWIN SH/SA optical gratings and AKS servo drives.

In terms of cost and integration cycle, the LMS series adopts lightweight extruded profiles with less material consumption, delivering a lower overall procurement cost and suiting mass-produced standardized light-duty precision equipment. The BMS series features thickened base and dual-guide structure with more complex machining processes, leading to slightly higher costs. However, it eliminates the need for extra auxiliary support tooling and greatly reduces mechanical design workload for long-stroke equipment. As a domestic independent manufacturer of linear motor modules, SMARTWIN Intelligent Equipment provides LMS & BMS model selection calculation based on customers’ actual working conditions. Balancing equipment precision, load requirements and overall cost control, we offer matched direct-drive motion platforms for various automation segments.
